About An Súgán
An Súgán Seafood Bar & Restaurant was established in 1978 in the family home of Kevin O’Crowley, husband of Brenda, the chef who started the business in a front room of a family home on Pearse Street, Clonakilty.
In 1981, Brenda and Kevin purchased what was the Cinema bar and started an extensive renovation project. Kevin had previously worked as an architect in London where Brenda had trained in Westminster College. The idea was to recreate a traditional pub frontage which Kevin designed with the help of sign writer Tomas Tuipear, a native of Clonakilty who had lived in London with Kevin and Brenda. Brenda, from the beginning cooked foods that were local to Clonakilty and established early on a reputation for cooking fish. Over the years the business grew into adjoining building and a new dining room and guesthouse were added.
Sinead, who now runs the business, with the continued support of Kevin and Brenda, retired from her studies to work. Although the business has grown, it remains rooted in the community.
